UNOFFICIAL information reaching Guyana is that a final-year male
Guyanese medical student pursuing studies in Cuba, through a government
scholarship has been killed in an altercation there.
This is according to Public Service Minister, Dr Jenifer Westford, who
indicated that her office was trying to ascertain the identity of the
suspect, presently in custody of Cuban police.
Contacted by this publication for a comment, Minister Westford said she
was still trying to ascertain the identity of the student and the
reasons behind the tragic incident. Until then, she would not be able to
disclose the name of the deceased. Nevertheless, she did disclose that
another student pursuing studies in Cuba has a name similar to that of
the deceased.
"We have a name, (but we) are trying to get more information before we
break it to the media, and before we contact the parents," Minister
Westford explained. According to Dr. Westford, Guyana is also awaiting a
detailed report of the incident from Cuban authorities.
Police have commenced investigating the incident, and have given
assurance that every effort would be made to unearth the truth behind
this whole matter.
