Coast Guard repatriates 46 Cubans to island
The Associated Press
MIAMI -- The U.S. Coast Guard has repatriated 46 Cuban migrants who were
interdicted at sea in two separate cases this week.
Officials say the first group of 29 Cubans was stopped Saturday aboard a
15-foot raft south of Key West. The second group of 17 aboard a boat was
also interdicted near Key West on Sunday.
Both groups were later placed aboard the 154-foot Coast Guard Cutter
William Flores and were taken back to Cuba on Thursday.
Under the federal wet foot/dry foot policy, Cubans who are caught at sea
are generally returned to the communist island while those that reach
U.S. shores are usually permitted to stay.
