Cuban communism resting in peace

Cuban communism resting in peace
August 16, 2015

ENOUGH is enough!
As far as communism in Cuba is concerned, we have no doubt it's headed
to the exit, what with the resumption of its diplomatic ties with the
United States that officially began on Friday, Aug. 14. It was the day
when, for the first time in 54 years, the US embassy in Cuba reopened
with a flag ceremony attended by Secretary of State John Kerry and his
Cuban counterpart Bruno Rodriguez in the capital city of Havana.
The two had also graced the reopening of the Cuban embassy in Washington
a month ago.
The reinvigorated diplomatic ties between the two Cold War neighboring
foes would put an end to trade restrictions. The US trade embargo on the
island had ended.
"The people of Cuba would be best served by a genuine democracy, where
people are free to choose their leaders," Kerry told a crowd of hundreds
gathered outside the embassy building.
US President Barack Obama and Cuba's Raul Castro, as early as December
last year, made the initial reconciliatory talks aimed at forging
genuine democracy in their nations.
Raul Castro is definitely departing from the communist but dictatorial
leadership initiated by his brother and predecessor, Fidel Castro, who
is now 89 and bedridden.
There is no doubt, however, that Raul's move has the blessing of Fidel,
who would like to be remembered for the good he has done for his people.
It is only by reconciling with the United States that Cuba could recover
lost ground.
Fidel Castro had demanded that the US pay his country "millions of
dollars" lost because of the US trade embargo. Hence, it may be assumed
that such demand had factored in the resumption of diplomatic ties.
As expected, Kerry's visit to Cuba drew criticism from several leading
Republicans, including presidential candidate Jeb Bush, who said it was
"a birthday present for Fidel Castro — a symbol of the Obama
administration's acquiescence to his ruthless legacy."
President Obama has clearly a good reason for Fidel Castro's change of
heart.
That change of heart became very apparent on his 89th birthday last
Thursday (Aug. 13) when the state newspaper Granma published his message
to the people: "We will never stop fighting for the peace and welfare of
all human beings, regardless of the color of their skin and which
country they come from."
Fidel Castro led his country from the Cuban Revolution in 1959 to the
year 2006 when he passed on power to his younger brother Raul due to
undisclosed health problems.
