Havana, May 4 (EFE).- Cuba's Conference of Catholic Bishops announced Monday the creation of a commission that will prepare for Pope Francis' scheduled visit to the island in September.

The commission, led by conference chair Dionisio Garcia, includes Cuba's Catholic primate, Cardinal Jaime Ortega, as well as Bishops Arturo Gonzalez, Emilio Aranguren, Juan de Dios Hernandez and Jose Felipe Perez, according to a statement on the conference's Web site.

Francis' sojourn in Cuba will be part of a trip to the United States, where he is to take part in the World Meeting of Families and meet with President Barack Obama, among other activities.

The pontiff's journey to the United States and Cuba will come as Havana and Washington pursue diplomatic normalization after 50 years of hostility amid a rapprochement in which Francis acted as mediator.

Francis will be the third pope to visit Cuba in 17 years, following John Paul II in 1998 and Benedict XVI in 2012.
